This newsletter covers developments with respect to the Bureau of Indian Standards (‘BIS’).
This issue of the newsletter covers various news items on recent developments around BIS, few recent case law, a detailed article titled “Recent shifts in India’s QCO framework – Revocations, deferrals, and the road ahead”, and updates relating to Quality Control Orders (QCOs).
The article discusses how over the past few weeks, multiple Ministries have rescinded and deferred QCOs across various sectors like chemicals, petrochemicals, metals, textiles, machinery, etc. Further, the Government has also implemented a major administrative transfer of iron and steel related quality control work from the DPIIT to the Ministry of Steel. The authors note that while the Bureau of Indian Standards is continuing to introduce new and revised Indian Standards, these steps aim to improve the ease of doing business, reduce burdens on MSMEs, while continuing to refine the national quality control ecosystem in India.
The part on QCO Updates covers QCOs due for implementation in the period from December 2025 till February 2026. This part also covers QCOs notified in the Official Gazette in November-December 2025, extensions to the existing QCOs, QCOs rescinded or deferred in public interest and few amendments made to existing QCOs recently. No QCO was notified by India on the WTO-TBT portal during this period.
Further, this newsletter by the LKS BIS Team highlights that companies in the Textiles and Furniture industries are likely to be impacted by the QCOs to be implemented in the upcoming 2 months.
