PART-1

Tax and FEMA Considerations for Inbound Expats
(NRIs, OCIs, Returning Indians and Other Non-Residents Moving to India)

International mobility can give rise to complex tax and regulatory obligations under the Income-tax Act and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Changes in residential status can impact the taxation of income and assets, disclosure requirements, banking arrangements, and the ability to hold and make investments in India and overseas.

This webinar series is designed to provide practical guidance on the tax and FEMA implications that arise at different stages of an individual's relocation journey, helping participants navigate compliance requirements and make informed financial decisions.

The Part 1 will focus on the tax and FEMA implications of relocating to India. It will cover key considerations during the year of arrival, including residential status determination, tax exposure, foreign asset reporting obligations, treaty-related issues, banking arrangements, and the treatment of overseas investments and assets.

The session will also discuss compliance requirements in subsequent years of residence in India, including taxation of income and assets, foreign asset disclosures, investment opportunities within and outside India, operation of overseas bank accounts, and FEMA regulations governing cross-border financial transactions. In addition, participants will gain insights into the implications of a future departure from India, including the impact of changes in residential status under both tax and FEMA laws.
